CreateSomething Sketchbook Contest: RESULTS!!!

CreateSomething Sketchbook Contest: RESULTS!!!

Kickstarted at KDY2015, we hosted a SKETCHBOOK CONTEST for all the students and creative professionals which include amateur artists, closet doodlers, independent artists and professional creatives! We were overwhelmed with the participation and had a tough time selecting the winners. Read on to see who made it!

 PRO CREATIVES CONTEST

The pros submissions again provided a range of works from pen sketchbook doodles to PDF documents covering processes, development and finished works. Here we were keen to see more refined works with the designer considering the application across product and the commercial viability of the works. There was quite a gap between designers which took this into account and designers who submitted works which were based more on personal expression and stylist exploration.

Create Something Pragun AgarwalSilk Screening Boogie Ride Tees

Pro Creative Winner: PRAGUN AGARWAL

Art Work: Boogie Ride | Theme: Characters & Monsters | Artprint & Tee

Artwork Underpinning: This is my interpretation of the theme, "Characters & Monsters". I have tried to embody the personality of these creatures through lines shapes and patterns that are embedded in the details of a busy street that is buzzing with life and vigor. Creative Director's Reason of Selection & Feedback: We liked the fact that Pragun submitted both a sketch and more refined crop of the work in progress. This showed us how the design had evolved in execution in a very graphic almost tribal visual style. We felt this work encapsulated a level of detail, pattern and graphic illustration that could lend itself to be extended further and transfer across an art print and a Tshirt design.

Create Something Vijay KrishPerfect to adorn your wall. Attam by Vijay Krish.

Pro Creative Runner Up*: VIJAY KRISH

Art Work: Attam | Theme: Characters & Monsters | Artprint

Artwork Underpinning: "Attam" is a piece that draws most of its visual inspiration from South Indian carnivals. Creative Director's Reason of Selection & Feedback: Vijay is a talented illustrator and character designer exploring complex compositions and stunning colour palette. Attam combined a high level of skill, flair and execution that impressed us all. The composition had a South Indian flavor mixed in with styles from animation and manga bursting with originality. We look forward to seeing this as a stunning art print at Kulture Shop. *The reason why we chose a runner up for Pros Creative is because we were floored by the sheer level of work that came in.

STUDENT CONTEST

The student submission ranged from rough sketchbook original works to fan art and characters. At Kulture Shop we do not deal with fan art, or work that may be in copyright infringement and thus some of these submissions were void. Thank you to all those who participated in the Create Something contest. We were extremely pleased with the amount of submissions and hope the number will increase with a wider breadth of styles and refinement in future KS Student contests. A large amount of the submissions did not take into account the artwork being used on a product and the consumer. As a designer you need to have the audience you are communicating to in mind while going through the design processes.

Create-something-blog---2An ode to the city of gardens. Bangalore Bloom by Tanvi Chunekar.

Student Winner: TANVI CHUNEKAR

Srishti Institute Of Art, Design & Technology, Bangalore | Portfolio Link

Art Work: Bangalore Bloom  | Theme: Urban Playground | Artprint

Artwork Underpinning: A walk down the lush avenues of Bangalore leaves one amazed as the eye takes in the riot of colors on the trees.  The artwork is a typographic exploration of the bloom in Bangalore. Creative Director's Reason of Selection & Feedback: We were pleased to receive this submission from the talented Tanvi Chunekar. This work was a clear graphic design response, well executed with refinement and detail. The perfect marriage of concept and visual execution in a typographic representation.  It is the strongest submission that meets our themes and has been executed superbly with context and substance. Well done, keep pushing to develop stronger and stronger works.

SPECIAL MENTIONS

Aditi Mundra

Student Special Mention: ADITI MUNDRA

ISDI Parsons Mumbai | Portfolio Link

Art Work: Ishaare | Theme: Characters & Monsters

Artwork Underpinning: Indians are the most expressive beings on Earth. We don't believe in subtleties and melodrama is deeply embedded in our systems. Whatever the emotion it is that we're trying to convey, there is definitely a unique gesture for it - which is why we sometimes find it difficult to control these involuntarily actions. Creative Director's Reason of Selection & Feedback: This fun , quirky piece captured a very Indian quality of expression. The simplistic illustration style could be developed further with more attention to space form and detail. Good work, keep it up and develop it further.

Aroop Mishra

Pro Creative Special Mention: AROOP MISHRA |  Portfolio Link

Art Work: Wild & Free | Theme: Characters & Monsters

Artwork Underpinning:(For the third artwork titled Wild & Free) The idea was to represent sadhu or monk. I mean, they don't like to live with societies or neither they want to be a part of it. They see everyone as same. They don't care about anything except their journey to spiritual liberation. They are kind of wild and free. Creative Director's Reason of Selection & Feedback: Aroop's arresting illustration style is oozing with originality is full of wit. We were pleased to receive such an engaging submission with a flair for illustration. We love the consistency in his style from typography, composition to colour palette. There is an uneasy, dark, creepy and almost comical horror tone to his works that stood out for us. grey_breaker
